About Us

All memory assessments and neuropsychological evaluations are performed under the direction of Dr. Paul Barrett.

As a licensed psychologist and certified health services provider in North Carolina, Dr. Paul Barrett has been helping people with memory loss since 1994. He specializes in the neuropsychological assessment of memory loss and other cognitive problems.

Dr. Barrett entered the mental health field because psychology always came naturally to him as a result of his upbringing. “My father was a clinical psychologist and my mother was a clinical social worker”, recalls Dr. Barrett, “so serving the needs of others came rather naturally to me. I remember working with emotionally disturbed children and adolescents at a state hospital for several summers after graduating from high school. It was so rewarding for me that I was immediately drawn to the field.”

After obtaining his master’s degree, he performed vocational evaluations at Goodwill for several years. “That gave me a lot of insight”, says Dr. Barrett, “into the real need that exists in the community for objective assessment of functioning and referral for appropriate services.”

That’s when he knew where to direct his talents. “I decided to get a doctorate in clinical psychology”, states Dr. Barrett, “so I could better use my skills and have more autonomy over how I would assist people.” He earned his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan and completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in clinical neuropsychology at Henry Ford Hospital.  “Now,” he says with satisfaction, “when I help a client realize they will have some control over their condition, I see the anxiety lift from their face. That’s the greatest reward for me.”

Born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, Dr. Barrett fell in love with the Western North Carolina mountains and moved to Asheville where he established Mountain Memory Assessment to serve communities in the region.
